The Voodoer

Normally, this site only recounts stories that are first hand knowledge of the reporting managers. But this story is the most bizarre we have ever encountered. This from Wealthmanagement.com:

“Investment Advisor Dawn Bennett was convicted earlier this month on charges that she defrauded investors out of millions of dollars, some of which she then used to pay $800,000 for prayers by Hindu priests to ward off federal investigators.

“Bennett used promissory notes to raise more than $20 million from at least 46 investors, to whom she promised 15 percent returns, in her company, DJBennett.com. She then used those funds to finance her lavish lifestyle, which included purchases of astrological gems, cosmetic medical procedures and the aforementioned religious rituals in India.
“I am in a very very tough fight going against my enemies and I need all the help I can get,” Bennett wrote in an email to Puja.net website operator Benjamin Collins.

“The FBI also found evidence in Bennett’s home that she tried to cast “voodoo” spells on the investigators looking into her crimes, finding instructions for placing a person under a “Beef Tongue Shut Up” curse and putting the initials of investigators on the inside lids of mason jars in her freezer.”

Lets not confuse whack jobs with eccentric behavior. This “advisor” is simply an embezzler with an unusual way of answering a complaint. Maybe this case should have been filed under humor, but we are sure these investors who are likely not going to get much of their money back are not laughing.

We all have our quirks and have employees who have their own. That doesn’t make them evil or criminal or even unproductive. As long as they aren’t crossing any lines and leaving their quirkiness mostly at home, managers are advised to leave them alone. Unless they are sticking needles into little straw dolls that look suspiciously like you. Or burning incense while uttering chants. While wearing a diaper. Over their pinstripe suits.
